JUST THE DiSCS PODCAST:
CABiN BOY

EPiSODE 78.

'Nothing so liberates the heart as when a fool awakes from his folly." - source unknown.
"Spielberg don't got shit on him!" - Merv Resnick of Harrisburg.

Ahoy, landlubbers! Set sail with Brian Saur and The Pink Smoke's John Cribbs as they shove off with the crew of The Filthy Whore and explore the gorgeous new Kino Lorber blu-ray release of 1994's much-maligned masterpiece Cabin Boy on the latest episode of Just the Discs.

Adam Resnick and Chris Elliott's warped spin on Captains Courageous, being the adventures of fancy lad Nathanial Mayweather and his encounters with stop motion ice creatures, a tobacco-spitting cupcake and a half-Viking half-shark guardian angel, was marooned at the box office upon release but has since shanghaied a dedicated cult audience. Among their number are Saur and Cribbs who, exhausting their nautical terms, are unabashed fans of the film's intentionally low-scale production, its uniquely bizarre humor and inspired casting (particularly character actor Mike Starr as a 30-foot tall insurance salesman).

Join them as they ruminate over whether the film would have fared better under the direction of producer Tim Burton, commiserate with Resnick and Elliott as they lament a post-Cabin Boy career drought, excessively quote their favorite lines and highlight the fancy features on this most noble disc.
